The 2016 Red Dog Relay has officially finished with Team Cherratta taking first place with a total of 167 placement points.

Some 25 teams and 300 competitors and crew made the most of the Pilbara region this year with an 18km run, 4km paddle, 48km mountain bike, 180km 4WD, 9km walk, 1km swim and 123km road bike leg.

The event’s first ever Super Team, comprising of champion athletes Nathan Jones, Ari Huston, Jules Johns and Mike Boundy, completed each leg independently.

Event Director, Mr Peter Kay, said the inclusion of the Super Team, sponsored by the Department of Sport and Recreation, demonstrates the event’s appeal to both recreational athletes and serious competitors.

“This event is unique to the Pilbara and makes the most of the spectacular region at a time when the Pilbara really comes alive with diversity,” he said.

“The changing weather patterns provided some added challenges for the teams this year, but it also came with a lot of red dirt fun. All teams camped under the stars and woke up to an indescribable sunrise over palm trees at Millstream. It is truly an sensational experience.”

Amongst the adventure revellers was Local Member for the Pilbara, the Hon. Brendon Grylls MLA, who has competed with his family for three consecutive years.

“This is such a great event for the region, as it really showcases the landscape and puts people amongst the spectacular scenery. Even locals are surprised by what they have at their doorsteps,” he continued.

“How better to spend the WA Day Long Weekend and celebrate some of Western Australia’s greatest assets.”

The Red Dog Relay is part of the Red Dog Festival that takes place each year over the WA Day Long Weekend. It is made possible by partners The Quarter in Karratha, City of Karratha, Event Alliance International, Cherratta Lodge, Yara Pilbara. Toxfree and various supplier partners.
